Halloween is fast approaching, and this time of year inspires the child in all of us to indulge in some sweet treats! Why not try it with some wine to make it even better? While the kids are out trick or treating, stay at home and have a “treat & treat” instead!
Here are some ideas for you!
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Try it with Meldville Barrel Select Syrah, VQA Niagara Peninsula, 2020, Lot 3765
The velvety milk chocolate and the peanut butter would pair perfectly with the luscious dark berry notes of this wine. The oak notes in this wine are delicious with the chocolate coating!
Kit Kat
Try it with Meldville Cabernet Franc, VQA Lincoln Lakeshore, Lot 3764
If we were to use wine lingo for candy, Kit Kat would be more of a “medium-bodied” chocolate bar. The flavour intensity of the Meldville Cabernet Franc would find a perfect balance with Kit Kat. Also, the bright red fruit flavours of raspberry, red currant and rhubarb would be great with the sweetness of candy–almost like chocolate-covered berries!
Coin Chocolates
Try it with Meldville Barrel Select Pinot Noir, VQA Niagara Peninsula, 2019, Lot 3763
These chocolates are one of the most reminiscent Halloween treats of our childhood and we would be remiss if we forgot to include them! Most of these are made from milk chocolate and would be harmonious with this Pinot Noir with its medium body, and notes of red fruit. This wine is unoaked and would elevate this simple Halloween candy to a classy level!
Skittles
Try it with Meldville Muscat Bubble, VQA Ontario, 2021, Lot 3757
This is a fun Halloween candy to do a wine pairing with. It has various fruit flavours that will be mirrored by the fruit and confected notes of this wine. With notes of melon, peach, apricot and fruit salad, the flavours in this wine will match the fruit flavours of the candy. What is even better is that this wine has a delicious sweetness to it that will make you want to try it with all the flavours of Skittles!
Meynards Swedish Berries
Try it with Meldville Pinot Gris, VQA Lincoln Lakeshore, 2021, Lot 3758
Meynards Swedish Berries is a Halloween favourite! The sweet raspberry and cherry flavours and the chewy texture would pair well with this Pinot Gris. This wine’s high acidity is a great counterpoint to the sweetness of the candies, and the wine’s notes of honey, grapefruit and red apple will sing harmoniously with the red berry fruit of the treats! Plus the lees aging on the wine will give the wine a fuller body, which will match perfectly with the chewiness of the Swedish Berries! This is a must-try!
As we can see, Halloween is not just for children! These adult-only wine and Halloween candy pairings will bring out the inner child in all of us and will remind us that they can be done on all food levels! This is great news for all of us who are wine lovers since this gives us more opportunities to be creative and at the end of the day, have a lot of fun! Enjoy!
